They didn’t charge admission at Savannah Country Day on Thursday night for the Hornets’ game with Johnson. But, if they had, Adam Byck would have been more than worth the price.
The Hornets senior, running behind a veteran offensive line, shredded the Atom Smashers for 264 yards and scored four touchdowns on 34 carries to lead Country Day to a solid 44-16 win in a game moved up one day due to Hurricane Irma.
“He’s a workhorse,” County Day coach Dennis Coyle said. “This is the second straight week he’s been over 200 yards. At 5-foot-11, 200 pounds, he punishes people.
“This is his third year as a starter,” Coyle added. “We’ve got five starters back on our offensive line, and four of them are seniors.”
As if to show he was not tired, Byck’s longest run of the game, 34 yards, came on his final rushing attempt.
The Hornets (2-1) wasted no time in setting the tone for the night as they scored on their opening drive, thanks in part to a 36-yard kickoff return from Ross Dunn that put the ball on the 50-yard line.
From there, Byck took over as he carried the ball on the first five plays, took a play off and then rambled 19 yards for a touchdown to culminate the seven-play drive.
On the next series, Hawkins Pindar kicked a 29-yard field goal, and Byck scored on a 1-yard run on the first play of the second quarter for a 16-0 Hornet lead. Johnson’s Namon Pointer hauled in a 23-yard pass from Troy Mitchell to get the Smashers on the board.
Byck finished the first quarter with 148 yards on 18 carries while the Hornet defense was limiting Johnson to 30 yards on only four plays.
The Hornets also hurt the Smashers in the passing game as quarterback Cole Giambino teamed with 6-3, 230-pound Chris Pendleton on a pair of touchdown passes. Pendleton scored on a 38-yard reception in the second quarter and scored on a 32-yard catch in the fourth.
Pendleton showed his strength and athleticism on the second catch when he carried a Johnson defender the final 10 yards as if he was a rag doll.
“Our passing game was efficient,” Coyle said. “We haven’t reached our potential yet. We’ve got a lot of things to clean up.”
After Byck scored twice in the second quarter to break the game open, the Atom Smashers (0-3) got 77-yard run from Earl Hamilton to give them something to savor.
Hamilton had 94 yards rushing, Andrew Clarke added 74 and Mitchell completed 12 of 23 passes for 127 yards.
