HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS: Byck powers Hornets past Brookstone in playoff opener

Savannah Country Day got 202 yards rushing from Adam Byck and rolled into the second round of the GHSA Class A Private state playoffs with a 33-7 win over Brookstone on Friday night at Saunders Field.

This was Country Day’s first home playoff game since 2007, which is also the last time the Hornets advanced to the second round. Coincidentally, Brookstone beat SCD in that game.

There was no chance of a repeat performance 10 years later, however, as Byck and a hungry Country Day defense were simply too much for the visitors, who were never in it. It was Brookstone’s fifth straight loss.

The peaking Hornets (9-2) — this was their fifth straight win — will now go on the road to face Mount Pisgah Christian (8-2), a pass-oriented team whose offense centers around quarterback Jacob Cendoya.

Cendoya has thrown for 2,428 yards this season and ran for 1,104. His top two receivers are Kai Williams with 965 yards receiving and David Woodward with 790. Mount Pisgah received a first-round bye.

Byck, who entered the game with 1,529 yards rushing, scored twice on runs of 5 and 1 yard. Hawkins Pindar kicked two field goals, and Jonathan Palmer scored on a 12-yard run and threw a 19-yard scoring pass to Win Johns as the Hornets showed excellent balance on offense.

Johns had seven catches for 63 yards and Chris Pendleton had one for 25.

“Adam is our workhorse,” Hornets coach Dennis Coyle said, “but we’ve got some good receivers and a good quarterback. We’ve got other weapons offensively. Last week, Adam went out in the third quarter (against Montgomery County) and we still won. We had 160 yards passing and 160 rushing in that game.

“We’ve got nine seniors who deserve a lot of credit,” added Coyle. “They’ve endured and worked hard. They were rewarded tonight and hopefully will be again next week against Mount Pisgah.”

The Hornets were leading 13-0 and took advantage of two big breaks in the final three minutes of the first half to break the game open.

Byck scored on a 1-yard run after the Hornets recovered a high snap on a punt at the 1. Two plays later, SCD recovered a fumble at the Cougar 20, then Palmer took a pitch and threw a perfect strike to Johns in the end zone with 1:24 on the clock to make it 26-0 at the half.

Palmer got the final SCD score on a 12-yard run from the Wildcat formation, and that was it for the Cougars (5-6).
