Whitemarsh Island Preserve remains closed while hurricane cleanup continues

Chatham County officials say the Whitemarsh Island Preserve will remain closed to the public while storm debris cleanup continues.

According to a notice from the county Tuesday, staff last month evaluated the county-owned park and found a number of trees in the area had been damaged by winds from Hurricane Matthew. Further review by the county’s debris removal contractor, AshBritt, determined that several downed or leaning trees and hanging branches would have to be removed.

On the advice of the county’s risk manager, the Preserve was closed to the public on Dec. 7, and will remain closed until the cleanup is completed.
